Hey ya'll!
I'm Mrs. Brooks, and I'm SO glad to be a part of the Spratley Family! Here's a little bit of info about me :)
A Little About Me
Born and raised in North Carolina, my heart will always be in the South! I have one big sister who lives in Durham, and my folks built their retirement home just outside of Asheville, NC. Both are awesome places to visit, and I'm so glad they are (relatively) close. After college, I moved to Northern Virginia where I met my hubby. He grew up in Yorktown, and was transferred home (DOD Civilian) shortly after we started dating. I moved to Yorktown a few months later and have considered this my home since 2001. I am active in my church and community, and love to stay active in general. I have run six half-marathons and will be running the Wicked 10K in October. I'm a huge advocate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and love to participate in events such as Relay for Life and Light the Night. I've recently fallen in love with lifting weights and doing short, high intensity workouts. I love to feel strong!! I am a quirky eater (I love all food, but can't have gluten, dairy, and lots of other yummy things) and love my morning coffee from a French Press (or Starbucks!). My chocolate has to be DARK, and I LOVE sushi! I'm (somewhat) addicted to social media & Candy Crush--yes, I'm one of those people that takes pictures of their food!!
My Family
My husband, Andy, and I live in York County and have two fantastic boys. James is in 5th grade (!!!) and David is in 3rd grade. They are ALL BOY--full of energy and keep me on my toes :) I love all three of my boys dearly and can't imagine doing life without them! You'll often hear funny stories about my boys, and I'm sure the kids will meet them eventually. James and David are very excited that their mom is a teacher :) In fact, James told his teacher at Open House that he has a "trick up his sleeve" since his mom is a Math teacher!
Our Garden
You'll hear me talk about the garden a LOT. We LOVE being surrounded by family (Andy's parents, sister & family, aunt/uncle, and grandmother are all on the same land!), and are blessed to have a rather large garden. Andy does all the hard work getting the fields ready and then I step in to help plant, weed, pick, and cook! It was tons of fun to have lots of friends come pick veggies and blueberries all summer!
How I Got To Spratley
I went to Sweet Briar College just outside of Lynchburg, VA for my undergrad. SBC is an all women's college and I loved my time there. I got my degree in Math/Computer Science and moved to Northern VA to work in Computer Programming. I did the computer thing as a contractor for a few years after I moved down here, but realized my heart was not in it.
In the summer of 2003, I joined the Transition to Teaching Program in Newport News and after an intensive 6-week program, was fully licensed to teach 6-12 Math. I began teaching at Hines Middle School and was blessed to teach Algebra & Geometry to the Gifted Students at Hines. T2T was a three year program in which I also attained my Masters of Education from Old Dominion University. James was born in 2006, and after one year teaching full-time with a baby, I decided to go part-time. I taught one year at Menchville High School (9th grade H Geometry). With David on his way in September of 2008, I decided to stay home with my boys.
Five years later, David went to Kindergarten! Once Andy & I realized he was made for school, we decided it was time for me to come back to the working world. I loved teaching, and--specifically--I loved teaching Gifted Students. When the position at Spratley came to my attention, I realized it was the perfect fit. Luckily, Dr. Crum agreed! This will be my 4th year at Spratley -- I love it here and can't imagine teaching anywhere else!
